Jubilee House (Madeley Parish Council headquarters) was built as a Victorian Market Hall and shopping arcade in 1869/70. Market day was Saturday and trade was mainly in vegetables, meat and hardware.
The market was not held after 1903 until it was revived in about 1980 - by Telford and Wrekin Council - when it was moved to Russell Square. In the early 1900's the Jubilee House was known as, The Arcade. Since it stopped being a market hall it has been used for a variety of purposes such as a garage at one time and as a nut and bolt factory as another. The nut and bolt factory was called The Jubilee Nut and Pressworks Limited.
By the late 1900's the building was derelict and the Parish Council bought it to provide larger and more central premises for the Council itself and to offer a wide range of facilities to the community. Most of the original building had to be demolished but the facade was kept and this was incorporated into the new building which was opened in 1997 and given the name Jubilee House in commemoration of one of its more recent uses.
If you look carefully at the building and, especially, the fittings and decoration inside you can learn a lot about Madeley's history and about the past uses of Jubilee House.
