Website Navigation

The Madeley Parish Council Website has various navigational features which are designed to help you browse more effectively.

Primary Navigation

The primary navigation appears towards the top of every page, and lists the main website sections. To access one of these sections, click on the name or press Enter when link has focus, if using keyboard. The 'current section' is denoted by a white background, bold black text and thick black right-hand border.

Secondary Navigation

The secondary navigation is found above the primary navigation, and uses background symbols to aid identification. It appears on the right of each page, and provides links to the Help page, Site map and Contact Form. To access any of these, click on its name or press Enter when the link has focus, if using keyboard. At the foot of each page you will find links to our Terms and Conditions, Privacy Policy and Contact form.

Breadcrumb Navigation

The Breadcrumb navigation is located between the primary and secondary navigation. The Breadcrumb navigation tracks the path you follow as you navigate our site. With just one click you can quickly navigate to any point or level on that path.

Contextual Navigation

The contextual navigation is found beneath the Breadcrumb navigation on the left side of each pages, and serves two purposes:

To access a page, click on it's name or press Enter when the link has focus, if using keyboard. The 'current page' is denoted by bold black text and thick black right-hand border.

I can't use a mouse - What do I do?

Many users have problems using the mouse. They will use it as little as possible to recover from Repetitive Strain Injury, or to prevent RSI. Users with disabilities find it difficult to control the mouse. They have to rely on the keyboard as much as possible, or even as the only means of navigating Websites. Users without disabilities can navigate the web more efficiently if they can use both mouse and keyboard. However, it is often difficult to see where you are when a Website is navigated in this way.

With the Madeley Parish Council Website this problem does not arise. The background colour and border properties of all links changes when they receive focus. This also applies to form input boxes and textarea. Using the keyboard to navigate this user friendly site is very easy.

Using Online Forms

Our online forms have been produced using the same strict standards as applied to the Website. They too are compliant with accessibility guidelines and are easy to use. They are keyboard accessible, with the background colour of input boxes and textarea changing when receiving focus. Each form element is labeled to aid Assistive Technology users.

Alternative Website Versions

Many people will use their browser or Assistive Technologies to customise the look of the website. We have provided several options for you to chose from. To set your preferences, see the Change Style options on the Home page.

Please note:

When using the Site Search facility the results are generated dynamically. This renders the page in default style, no matter what preference has been selected.

Downloading Files

We have provided an audio version of appropriate pages, which you can download and play in various media.

To download one of these files, dependant on the type of browser you are using, do one of the following:

  1. Internet Explorer - right click on file and select 'save target as'.
  2. Mozilla Firefox - right click on file and select 'save link as'.
  3. Opera - right click on file and select 'save linked content as'.
  4. Netscape Navigator - right click on file and select 'save link as'.
  5. Safari - right click on file and select 'download linked file as'.

But what if I cannot use a Mouse?

There are methods for configuring your computer to simulate a right mouse click, but these can be complex. The easiest method is this.

Tab to the required link, and when it receives focus press and hold down the 'shift' key then press F10. This opens up an options box (at this point you can release the shift key). Use the 'arrow' keys to scroll to your choice, then press Enter.

Text Highlighting

By default, text is highlighted to aid those with learning difficulties and Dyslexia. It breaks the page down into manageable blocks to make it less daunting. This should not interfere with normal page viewing as it occurs only on mouseover. It can be turned off by selecting 'Turn off text highlighting' in the Change Style options on the Home page.

External Links

Some users can suffer disorientation when external links open in a new window, while others prefer them to do so. All such links in this Website have user preferences.

Example: (The following two links are not live)

  1. Open this link in current window
  2. Open this link in new window
